Spiritual Development
The key to spiritual development is dealing with the soul, preparing it ro establish link with Allah – the Supreme Soul.
“Soul is like a transparent mirror. Vitiated by vice, it gets off from natural purity and gets tarnished. Thereupon divine rays do not reflect thereon.”
- Khanbahadur Ahsanullah, in Sufi
Our soul will have to be made faultless and pure before arriving at the court of Allah. The more the soul will be pure, the more the divine light will be reflected there. If the paleness of the soul is destroyed, such delight will be enjoyable in comparison to which the heaven will seem trifle.
Soul is not merely the carrier or guide of the body but also the carrier of the mental faculties. By its signal the hands and feet are motored, the mind is diverted from evil deeds to good deeds. Human being does not merely seek satisfaction like the beasts; he seeks that happiness which is eternal and pure, discards beastlike temporary pleasures. As an emperor rules over his subjects, likewise the soul lords over the lesser instincts. Conscience is like the prime minister of the soul. Conscience judges good and evil. The soul guides the human being in honest direction, free from the influence of propensities. Conscience is like wisdom, the soul is like the guide. The more the soul is weak, the more it is subdued by the instinct.
Soul is a deciding power. The soul guides the human being in honest direction, free from the influence of propensities. Conscience is like wisdom, the soul is like the guide. The more the soul is weak, the more it is subdued by the instinct. The man who is guided by the propensity, his heart gets rusted. If this rust is not cleansed, the bright ray of divine light is not reflected.
Our soul is like a well. As the well is filled with water flowing from small channels likewise various feelings from senses are stored in the soul. To make the well clean it is needed not only to stop the small channels but also to drain out the water already stored. Likewise we shall have to be protected from the urge of evil instincts and along with that what was previously stored. Paleness will have to be removed and the dominant feeling of self-opinion will have to be uprooted.
Knowledge by it self cannot bring about perfection in a human being. One needs to coordinate his body, mind and soul. That is the knowledge which caters to the body, mind and soul. The perfect knowledge is that which reduce the distance between the Creator and the created and establishes union between them.
The knowledge of the Supreme Soul is derived from the knowledge of the self. The Hadith says, “He who has known himself has known Alllah”.
Questions raised by a Sufi to know the self: ‘Nothing in the world is so close to you as yourself. You think over: who are you? Where have you come from? And in which you feel happy or sorrow? Some of your aspects are animal like and some are heavenly. If you can overcome your cardinal passions, protect yourself from lust and anger only then you will be able to realize the greatness of the Creator. You have to keep in mind that you are the combination of body and soul.’
Human knowledge is battered by the mystery of creation. Even though man carries on research for ages after ages, he will not be able to uncover an iota of the Divine Faculty. It is beyond human capacity to surmise the immense skill in the creation of the universe through our small vision. The mind gets overwhelmed with the sense of gratitude at the momentary realization of the beauty and artistic texture of the fabric of the universe. How can the human beings that cannot conceive of an ant’s capacity, unravel the mystery of the universe? So, let me say: come out of the door and think, perceive the artistic skill of the Great Lord, strive to realize a little of His unending attributes, gratify yourself and be worthy of the human name.
“To muse on the mystery of creation for an hour is superior to one year’s prayer”. - Hadith
If a person thinks of the mystery of creation his mind is diffused with the sense of love and devotion. If the starry sky is observed deeply at dead of night, profound love and reverence will swell up for the Creator. Devotional love is the bridge between the Creator and the created. Only by dint of devotional love the human soul can get linked with the Supreme Soul.
Soul and passion are the objects of worldly test. It is their nature to be at war with each other. The soul wants to master over the passion and the passion wants to control the soul. It has been said before that soul emanates from the Divine Being and acts as per His command. The soul remains always eager to guide human being in the right direction in order to help him attain the nearness of Allah. On the other hand, passion always tends to disobey the order of the soul and leads to the allurement of the Satan. Such a conflict exists always between them. Human being has to face this conflict throughout his life. A person who gets inclined to passion, disobeying the command of the soul, earns perpetual unhappiness. On the other hand, a man who controls the passion and acts as per direction of the soul is blessed with eternal bliss and happiness.
Getting help of the creator through constant practice is the main purpose of prayer. We should pray to Allah with full devotion. Self-control is a media through which one can be closer to Allah. It reduces attraction to worldly life and increases love to Allah.
Generally, obsession for sex, greed, yearning for wealth, gluttony and proudness deviates human being from honest path. Greatness of human being lies in suppressing those. The much one feels attraction to worldly life the far that person is from Allah.
Instinct: The person who is guided by the instinct is like a beast. If the soul becomes strong the instincts become weak. He who is under the surveillance of instinct is worth the name of human being.

People having enough scope to satisfy the evil urge without any hindrance or obstacle, if stay away from sin for fear of Allah, gains great virtue. For this if the youths perform religious duties through the impulse of instincts, they can be especially dear to Allah.

The person who has protected the stomach, sexual sense and tongue from bad use has been saved from all misfortune.
Anger: Anger is the weapon to protect the self. This instinct is like the protector of human being. Man would have progressed greatly without rage. But it becomes the concern for great loss if it crosses the limit. Rage is a gift from Allah and as such it is not possible to uproot it. But it can be controlled by perseverance. With the help of perseverance anger should be subdued to such an extent that it can be used as much as is necessary for self-defence. They are the real heroes who can subdue anger. Patience is the prevention of anger.

Human being becomes mad with rage, losses temper and power of thinking or reasoning. When in rage he losses his common sense and does not find anything than the root cause of furry.
Greed: Human being feel greedy for food and drink. excessive eating or drinking makes body lazy and brain feeble. Anger and greed are subdued by perseverance. In fact it is work ok chivalry to subdue anger and greed. The lust for wealth and lust for devotion cannot find place in the same heart at the same time. If the greed for wealth is not crushed, devotion cannot find its place.

Merits and demerits are associated with wealth. On one hand wealth is like ambrosia and on the other hand it is like venom. The aim of money is to spend for ameliorating the distress of others by being indifferent to wealth and severing the tie of interest. Wealth is an object of great test whose honest use bring great virtue and dishonest use beings great sin.

Wealth may be used for ‘Sadka’, ‘Khairat’, ‘Zakat’, ‘Hajj’ and ‘Chawobe jaria’. Allah becomes pleased and ever after death the donor continues to get virtue, if wealth is spent for mosque, medical centre, roads, ponds, orphanage, rest house for travellers, madrasha, bridge, etc. for well-being of the people. Besides benevolent activities, the essential expenses for the household are also mitigated by wealth.
Ill-temper: Ill-temper spoils all prayers of human being. Instincts will have to be subdued from which bad habits or ill-temper are generated. Ill-temper and bad habit are so great sins that no prayer can provide good result against it. Ill-temper makes the heart pale and deprives from great delight. Ill-temperament is at the harsh word and Allah becomes displeased.
Improper use of tonge: The soul becomes polluted by this unnecessary wastage of words, jesting, mocking, vilification, blaming without reason, backbiting and giving bluff. He who has controlled food, sleep and words is a real saint.

None should be reprimanded as he can attain more virtue than the reprimanded by acknowledging religious faith before death.
Calumny: Anything spoken in presence which harts others, when spoken in absence is called calumny or speaking ill of others. One will share sin if he or she hears slandering. Slandering or secretly against anybody are equally offensive. As fire burns dry grass likewise calumny burns to ashes good qualities. If the fault of anybody is found, instead of criticising in presence of others, he or she should be advised in secret but he or she should not be dishonoured or given shame.
Proudness: Supremacy belongs to Allah. He, who claims that, tussles with Allah. It is a great sin to know ownself as great. Those who expresses proudness having the idea that there knowledge and prayer are superior than others, they are worst sufferers.

Proudness goes away if one inculcates the activities as of the prophet. He used to say—“I’m a servant so I sit, eat and dress up with modesty”. Those who want to derive pleasure from the after life, follow the footprints of the prophet and his close associates.

Human being should always remember that he or she has been created from soil and his ancestors originated from vile sperm. He or she who has been born out of meanest soil and impure sperm and whose body is the carrier of stool and urine, it is not nice of him to tell tall talks
Ria: Ria is similar to a great sin, which occurs when some one is assumed as partner of Allah. Ria occurs if the aim in pious activities or prayer becomes to draw others regard and praise. When any honest work is done with the motive of showing to people it is called Ria. Allah does not accept those prayer where there is a molecule of Ria.

Those religious teachers who are busy in showing their prominence, those devotees who wish to show self-influence—in fact their prayers are not for Allah but for the satisfaction of their self-instinct. Allah sees the hidden resolve in the heart, understands clearly who is doing what and for what. He feels piety for them who do not work for Him and feels sorry because being His creation they ridicule Him.
Jealousy: Some people have the nature to become mentally shocked by observing progress and delighted to see misfortune caused to others. Self-conceitness, greed for money and thirst for honour are the main causes of jealousy.

Jealousy damages human virtues. One gets the result of jealousy instantly. He gathers sin by showing dissatisfaction at the law of the creator.

Prophet has compared it with fire—“As fire burns timber to ashes so also envy spoils virtue”. Being jealous a spiteful person hits with a hatchet at the root of his own peace.
Gluttony: Human heart is like a crop field. As crop is spoiled due to excessive rain likewise the good qualities of the heart are spoiled due to over eating. Satisfaction over meal brings proudiness and negligence, turns the heart rough and tough and gives no scope to ventilate kindness. If stomach full meal is taken, prayer becomes burdensome and all sorts of urges become dominant.

The heart becomes fresh due to the influence of hunger, and delight is derived from prayer. Due to the influence of hunger the heart becomes soft and proud ness and boasting are gone away, the evil instinct is controlled, gets relieve from excessive sleep, the health is developed and frugality is learnt.
